Brushing Teeth

Periodontal disease is an important medical concern for nearly every pet. Over 85% of all pets over the age of two years old have periodontal disease. As with many chronic diseases, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Begin by brushing your pet’s teeth when they are young, and schedule a dental cleaning with us early on.

A typical dental cleaning involves your pet showing up at 7:30. We start by performing an exam and bloodwork to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. Once this is done, a sedative and pain medication is given, followed by an IV catheter to ensure the safe and effective delivery of all anesthetic drugs. An IV injection is given to make your pet go to sleep. Next, your pet is hooked up to gas anesthesia. X-rays are then taken, the teeth are scaled and polished, any additional treatments are performed, and your pet is woken up.

The most critical aspect of the procedure is safety. We have registered veterinary technicians monitoring your pet the entire time, as well as our state of the, are anesthetic monitoring equipment. Your pet has someone with them during the entire recovery phase (as they are first waking up) and is monitored throughout the day in our treatment ward. A balanced anesthesia protocol allows us to use lower levels of gas anesthesia which also makes the procedure safer.
